Another Cambridge Housing Authority property was recognized at Preservation Massachusetts’ Annual Preservation Awards. The Brooks Apartments at 78–80 Porter Road in Cambridge received the Mayor Thomas M. Menino Legacy Award, which honors transformative preservation projects that strengthen communities through partnership while revitalizing historic buildings for future use.

This year’s theme, “Preservation is Revolutionary,” marked the 250th anniversary of American history and highlighted projects across the Commonwealth that show how historic preservation can transform communities. CHA is honored to be recognized alongside other preservation efforts from across Massachusetts, including 116 Norfolk Street, which also received recognition that same evening.

The Brooks Apartments is a four-story red brick Colonial Revival style building built in 1915 by local developer William F. Brooks and designed by Boston architects Newhall & Blevins. By the early 20th century, the building had reached a point where major updates were needed, including original plumbing and fixtures dating back to its construction and the absence of modern cooling systems.

Through the redevelopment process, CHA worked to modernize the building while preserving its historic character. Key features such as fireplaces in each unit, stained wood trim, and original doors were retained as part of the renovation, keeping the historic feel of the property intact while improving livability for residents.
