Daniel F. Burns Apartments is a federally-assisted elderly/disabled development located between Churchill and Clarendon Avenues in North Cambridge. The development was first occupied in November 1973. The development includes two pre-cast concrete mid-rise buildings- one four-story and one six-story- totaling 198 elderly/disabled apartments.
Bargmann Hendrie + Archetype, a Boston architecture firm, was selected as the designer for the modernization of Burns Apartments. Kickoff meetings were held in late spring 2016 with CHA staff and Burns residents. An Existing Conditions assessment took place over the summer and review meetings were held with residents in November 2016. As a result of the Existing Conditions Report findings, CHA is pursuing converting Burns units to project-based vouchers through a disposition process rather than through RAD to obtain the funds needed to complete the renovations. CHA submitted its application for disposition to HUD in December 2016. HUD is currently reviewing CHA’s disposition application. In the interim, CHA is moving forward with the schematic design phase to identify different options for building and site improvements at varying costs.
