The CHA is over half-way through its ambitious $1 billion reinvestment in public housing in Cambridge which is started in 2010. Since 2010, CHA has completed or has started construction on over $640 million of work in order to protect and preserve over 2,300 units of affordable housing. Current Construction Projects
Existing Conditions: Jefferson Park Federal consisted of eight building with a total of 175 units originally constructed in 1951 in North Cambridge. The buildings were in subpar condition, with poor ventilation, inadequate building envelope systems, and failing underground utilities. The buildings needed a comprehensive redevelopment to address these conditions.
Planned Work: The redevelopment of Jefferson Park involves the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of six new buildings. The project will increase the number of units to 278 apartments for families and single adults. The buildings were designed to Passive House standards and include rooftop solar panels. There will be an on-site food pantry, and two Head Start classrooms. The existing buildings have been demolished and construction of first phase is underway.
