The Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) recently celebrated Frank J. Manning Apartment’s 50th anniversary with a special gathering honoring its residents and history. Located in the heart of Central Square, Manning has been home to thousands of Cambridge residents since 1976.

A luncheon in the building’s common area highlighted presentations and remarks reflecting on the significance of Manning Apartment’s and the people who call it home.

Frank J. Manning Apartments was built to provide affordable housing for older adults and people with disabilities. From the beginning, its location placed residents in the center of one of Cambridge’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Manning was developed as part of the Central Square complex, alongside the City’s Central Square Branch Library and Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza.

Ed Henley, who has lived at Manning since the day it opened and was a speaker during the celebration, reflected on the strong sense of community that has defined Manning for five decades.

“From the beginning, Manning has been a community where people step up for one another and look out for their neighbors. We have always had residents who were willing to get involved and have a voice in the community. For me, the 50th anniversary was a celebration of the people who have built this community and continue to support one another. Manning is a sharing community, and that is what makes it so special.”

Henley also serves on the Massachusetts Senior Action Council.

In 2018, CHA completed a $65.3 million comprehensive modernization of the property, bringing significant improvements to units, building systems, common areas, and refreshed exterior. The project also created six additional units. This work helps to ensure another 50+ years of stability and engagement in Cambridge.

Merril Hassinger, who has lived at Manning Apartments for 15 years and currently serves as vice president of the Manning Tenant Council, reflected on the significance of the celebration and the opportunity to recognize Manning’s history. “I want to recognize and express our gratitude to CHA on behalf of the Tenant Council. Manning has been a community for 50 years, and so many people have contributed to making it what it is today. It is important to take a moment to say thank you, reflect on our history and recognize everyone who has helped make Manning a home. The event was such an enjoyable and memorable experience.”

The excitement for Manning’s 50th anniversary was on full display as attendees ate, laughed, and danced, enjoying each other’s company and celebrating a milestone that belongs to the entire Central Square neighborhood.

“I moved to Manning one year ago and I’ve never danced so much in my entire life,” said CHA resident Cheryl Townes.

“The community you all have built here has ripple effects far beyond this building,” said CHA Chief Executive Officer Clara Fraden. “Time and again, you all have shown up, brought people together, and made space for others in the community room. That is true leadership and how you keep a community strong from one generation to the next.”
